The Stars improve to 11-2 after defeating Cabrini 33-28.
Offensively, SCA had a tough time getting into a rhythm. Mid-way through the first quarter Haley Gustad went 1/2 from the free throw line to put the Stars on the scoreboard. The Stars trailed 11-4 at the end of the first quarter.
Cabrini scored the first basket of the second quarter to increase their lead to 13-4. Maryann Alexander and Lauren Arena scored the next 2 consecutive baskets to narrow the deficit to 13-8. However, Cabrini went on a 6-1 run to take a 19-9 lead into halftime.
Cabrini took their largest lead of the game in the third quarter. Scoring the first 4 points, they quickly took a 23-9 lead. However, the Stars were not ready to give in. Haley Gustad, Maryann Alexander, Lizzy Turek, and Maeve Burke each contributed to a 8-2 run. Cabrini led 25-17 at the end of the third quarter.
The fourth quarter is when the Stars took control of the game. Slowly and confidently, SCA outscored Cabrini 16-3 in the final 8 minutes. Defensively, the Stars went after Cabrini and forced several turnovers. With 2:30 to play, SCA took their first lead of the game and never looked back. Great ball movement and passes by the perimeter led to Maryann Alexander scoring 9 points in the fourth quarter. Lizzy Turek and Claire McClorey hit some clutch free throws to seal the game.
Maryann Alexander led the team with 16 points. Haley Gustad scored 6 and Lauren Arena added 5 points.
The Stars travel to Shrine on Thursday. Varsity game time is 5:30pm.
