The Stars faced off against Cabrini in their opening night of league play and came away with a 48-38 win.
SCA found themselves battling from behind for most of the first quarter. Cabrini took and early 4-0 lead before Maeve Burke made 2 free throws to put the Stars on the scoreboard. Cabrini rallied off the next 5 consecutive points and had their largest lead of the game, 9-4. However, the Stars answered right back and went on a 8-0 run to end the first quarter with a 12-9 lead.
The second quarter began with a made 3 point basket by Rachel Luomala. Sarah Johnston added a basket and the Stars increased their lead to 17-9. Cabrini’s aggressiveness and intensity got them right back in the game, as they went on 9-2 run to get within a point,
19-18. SCA regrouped and finished finished the half on a 9-3 run and led 28-21at half.
Although, Cabrini scored the first basket after halftime, Darbi Klatt made a free throw and Lizzy Turek hit a 3 point shot to extend their lead to 32-23. The remainder of the third quarter was played rather evenly, however SCA outscored Cabrini 8-7 in the final minutes and took a 41-30 lead into the fourth quarter.
Cabrini came out and made a 3 point shot to start the fourth quarter and cut the deficit to 6 points. However, SCA managed to keep that 6 point lead for the majority of the fourth quarter. Rachel Luomala and Hailey Baumann made some key free throws to extend the final score to 48-38.
Lizzy Turek led the team with 12 points. Claire McClorey scored 10 points and Rachel Luomala added 7 points.
The Stars are 6-1 on the season and travel to Ann Arbor Greenhills on Friday.
