The Stars went on the road and lost a tough game to Shrine by the score of 35-33.
Shrine opened the game on a 8-0 run, but that would be the largest lead either team had throughout the game. Maryann Alexander and Gabby Green combined for the next 5 consecutive points for SCA to make it a 3 point game, 8-5. The remainder of the scoring for the first quarter came off 2 free throws by Shrine. Shrine had a 10-5 advantage after the first quarter.
Shrine started the second quarter by connecting on a 3 point shot, to increase their lead to 13-5. SCA answered that right back by going on a 11-0 run to take their first lead of the game at 16-13. During that 11-0 run, Maryann Alexander scored 7 of those points. Shrine finished the quarter on a 7-2 run and took a 20-18 lead into halftime.
The Stars came out of halftime ready to play. Maryann Alexander scored the first 4 points and the Stars took the lead, 22-20. Surely enough, Shrine followed with a basket of their own to tie the game. The third quarter finished in a see-saw battle. The game was either tied or each team took turns having a one point advantage. Score was tied at 27 heading into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter was intense. A couple of made baskets by both teams and the score was tied at 30. Lizzy Turek and Maryann Alexander combined for the next 3 points and the Stars are up 33-30 with 1:30 left to play. Shrine scored on their next trip down the floor, but SCA remained in the lead 33-32. The next offensive possession for the Stars ended in a missed shot.
Shrine rebounded the ball and what arguably could have been a jump ball, ended in Grace Gulowski’s 5th foul of the game. Shrine was in the bonus, so they walked down the court and made 1/2 free throws to tie the game. The Stars came down the court and had 2 high percentage shots from inside the key, but the ball did not fall. SCA played great defense but a foul was called with 20 seconds remaining. Shrine made both free throws to take the 2 point lead 35-33. The Stars had one more offensive possession, but could not score.
Maryann Alexander led the Stars with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Gabby Green added 13 points.
