SCA defeated Cardinal Mooney in the Championship game of the Cardinal Mooney Christmas Tournament by the score of 44-42 in overtime.
The first quarter was an even battle with both teams trading baskets. However, the Stars had a 2 point advantage, 7-5 at the end of the first quarter. SCA started to pull ahead in the second quarter by creating steals on the press and took a 10 point lead, 20-10. Foul trouble started to take over for the Stars and Cardinal Mooney scored 10 points in the second quarter, all from the free throw line. Halftime score was 20-15.
The third quarter was high scoring for both teams. Gabby Green hit a 3 point shot to open up the second half. Gabby then followed that up with a quick steal and open court layup to give the Stars a 25-15 lead. SCA went on to outscore Cardinal Mooney 16-13 in the third, giving the Stars and 8 point advantage at the end of the third quarter.
Offensively, the fourth quarter was a struggle for the Stars. Once again, foul trouble came into play and it forced SCA to play a half court game. Cardinal Mooney forced the ball inside and was able to get 6 quick points. Turnovers on offense contributed to the Stars only scoring 3 points in the fourth quarter. Score was tied at 39 to end regulation.
Overtime was played like a chess match. Both teams were patient on offense, in the hope of getting the best shot. Cardinal Mooney scored the first 3 points of overtime, taking a 42-39 lead. With a minute to go in overtime, Maryann Alexander grabbed a big offensive rebound and was fouled on the shot. She hit both free throws to make it a 42-41 game. SCA fouled Cardinal Mooney, however, they missed both shots. SCA rebounded the missed shot and with 7.5 seconds remaining began to head down court. With 2 seconds remaining, Grace Gulowki lauched a baseball throw from ¾ court and the ball went in. Stars WIN, 44-42
Gabby Green led the team with 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 steals. Maryann Alexander also scored 13 points and 12 rebounds.
